How to choose quality leather furniture.

Which leather is the best

There are quite a few quality leathers available in South Africa. One example is Oryx, but certainly worth looking at, since you are investing a substantial amount into quality furniture. What makes it even more unique and valued, is the fact that Oryx leather is characterised by scars and scratches

Oryx leather boasts an absorbent texture due to the fact that when alive, the Gemsbok stores water in its hide. The large follicles present in the Oryx’s hide as a result of its course hair allow tanning agents to penetrate easily – making the colour of Oryx leather that much richer, deeper and more luxurious.

Every skin is unique, ensuring your Oryx item remains an individually exclusive piece.

For the rest it is important to be sure that you purchase genuine quality leather and beware of the fake products on the market.

How to spot a fake

Always check the back of the furniture piece. You should look to see whether there’s a single piece of leather or several stitched together.

Keep in mind that the average hide is too small to cover a huge couch in one single piece of leather. If you see this, you can be certain it’s a fake.

Of course, it’s usually easy to distinguish genuine leather from fakes just by looking at the price. But that can be deceiving too. There’s no guarantee that pricey leather furniture is genuine. But “to good to be true” is usually just that!

You can identify genuine leather by texture and smell. It should be soft and warm to the touch and should have a distinctive aroma which is rich and appealing, unlike faux leather which emits an unpleasant chemical smell. Leather takes on the temperature of your body within 12 seconds, so the notion that leather is cold is a misconception.

Look for leather upholstery with zippered seat cushions. While the leather can last decades, the seat cushion may not and you’ll want easy access to get it refilled. You can also spot if the leather is right through. You should see the leather on the inside. If you don’t it is probably Bonded Leather. Bonded Leather does not come from the whole animal skin. Bonded Leather is a polyurethane fabric with leather shavings glued onto the back of the fabric.

Check the Frame

A sturdy frames means long-lasting furniture. Avoid frames made of particleboard, plastic, or metal; they may warp and crack.

Tip: To test frame strength, lift one front corner or leg of the sofa off the floor. By the time you’ve raised it 10cm, the other front leg should have risen too. If it’s still touching the floor, the frame has too much give; it’s weak.

Ask your salesperson for a guarantee on the frame of at least 5 years.

Feel Your Fillings

Polyurethane foam is a low-cost, easy-care cushion filling. But the more durable, high-density type can feel hard, and softer, low-density foam deteriorates more rapidly with constant use.

OUHOUT MEUBELS guarantees a quality frame, genuine quality leather and durable fillings.
